Makeup and Early Skin Ageing

Does makeup lead to premature skin ageing

Excessive and regular use of makeup can lead to early ageing of the skin. Makeup, particularly oil base can clog skin pores that leads to acne and pimples. It doesn’t stop there, it can pave the way for fine lines around the eyes. Rapid wrinkling and accelerated dryness occur with talc based products. Much as makeup techniques such as contouring is an art form, various chemicals are present in makeup which could result in early signs of ageing.

Skincare using natural ingredients for a natural look not only avoids dryness and irritation, it also reveals ones true beauty. Regular makeup use can cause premature ageing through loss of tone and skin elasticity resulting in early wrinkling. This can be attributed to minerals such as Bismuth Oxychloride, a cost effective filler used by many companies.

REGULAR USE OF MAKEUP

Regularly using makeup can cause early ageing of the skin as does eating sugary or fatty foods. Lack of exercise could contribute as does mental stress to overall health status.

Although it may sound counterintuitive, the same makeup that you’re using to cover up wrinkles and blemishes may be making them worse, says dermatologist Dr. Robin Evans. Over time, makeup tends to settle into fine lines and wrinkles, which essentially just shines a spotlight on the very signs of aging you’re trying to hide. It’s like a telltale heart that gets louder the longer you try to cover it up. Everyone ages, so rather than trying to bury your age under layers of foundation, embrace your true face — you might be surprised at how much younger you actually look.

A BLOGGERS OPINION

I believe that using makeup excessively and regularly contributes to pre-mature aging. Not only that, but the majority of cosmetics companies use sub-standard ingredients in their formulas which cause all sorts of skin issues… acne, irritation, dryness etc.

The chemicals within the products themselves cause your skin to lose tone, elasticity – making you look years older

People never really look at cosmetics under a microscope like they do skincare. I believe this is a big mistake.

Foundation especially oil based clogs pores and leads to all sorts of issues. That’s why a double cleanse is so important when using these products and good preventative skincare before applying them

ACCORDING TO THE NEW YORK TIMES

“Yes, it is a fact. Regular use of makeup, particularly in excess, can lead to early aging of the skin. Mothers and grandmothers have been routinely warning young adolescent girls about excess use of makeup, saying it can be harmful. Now it is being substantiated.

Using makeup on the face, particularly oil based ones can clog the skin pores leading to acne and pimples. It can also aggravate fine lines below and around eyes, which is a sign of aging. Talc based make up products when used, cause dryness of skin and early and more rapid wrinkling. Mineral make up products may contain bismuth oxy chloride. This can cause dryness, irritation and peeling of skin. In addition, various kind of chemicals present in different makeup products can cause loss of tone and elasticity of skin, resulting in early wrinkling, again a sign of aging.

If one applies any cosmetic product roughly over the skin or applies it many times by rubbing, this itself may irritate the skin making it lose and wrinkled. Thus it can be seen that due to multiple reasons, regular use of makeup can cause the skin to age early. Eating much sugary or fatty foods, lack of exercise, physical and mental stress, overall health status, are other factors that can contribute to it.”

SKINCARE - SLOW SKIN AGEING

Adopting a skincare routing can significantly reduce signs of ageing. First consider your needs. Is your skin oily, dry, combination? This is a good starting block to determine your skincare choices. Skincare rituals are normally in steps.

  1. Cleansing
  2. Toning
  3. Moisturising

Use a cleanser to expel debris from atmospheric pollution and dead skin cells. Your skin picks up lots of dirt particles throughout the day and can sit and even become absorbed. Cleansing will clear these revealing bare skin. Its recommended to use a cleanser to prepare your skin for toning.

Toning serves several purposes – use a toner to remove build up of sebum while hydrating your skin. Toners are absorbed by your skin maintaining balance to pH while reducing pores and preventing moisture evaporation.

Depending on your skin type, following up with a serum or moisturiser is the final step before applying makeup. Moisturisers provide a defensive barrier for your skin that contain harmful chemicals found in makeup. If you have oily or combination skin, a good quality serum is enough for a consistent complexion. Quality serums will penetrate your skin offering a collagen boost to repair damaged skin. For dry skin, use a moisturiser. This will offer moisture retention for a firmer, plump appearance. Used alongside a serum, you can reap full benefit of what they can offer your skin. Ultimately restoring dullness and fatigue to a youthful and rejuvenated complexion.
